Gertie, a friend forever

Today I am writing from my heart and less from my head so bear with me. Just over a week ago my family helped our dear  10 year old shepherd, Gertie, pass peacefully in our home. After a 3 year battle with nose bleeds, sneezing, facial swelling her cancer became unbearable. As a veterinarian I knew it was time, as her mother I was terrified to let her go. Gertie came to my husband and I from the South Central LA shelter in 2003. She arrived skinny  and flea bitten and became one of the most brilliant dogs ever. Her diagnosis of adenocarcinoma (a cancer of the nasal passage) at only age 7 was crushing. Gertie was an ever vibrant and vigilant guardian and friend. She saw us through great life changes: 1st new car, 1st home, two children and finally the development of DTLAvets. Although her life feels shortened, I know that the sadness I feel is only tangible because we shared such wonderful times.

Gertie, your spirit will live on in our hearts forever. Thank you for the life's lessons and raising Carsley to take care of our family.
